It is no secret recreational basketball is a great sport for kids! It has multiple benefits, including hand-eye coordination, agility, stamina, and teamwork. If your child is new to sports, such as basketball, you may be wondering if there’s a difference between indoor and outdoor basketball. Here’s what you need to know!
People don’t often realize there are two different types of basketballs. Balls that are used indoors are softer and made of full-grain leather. Outdoor basketballs are made of harder materials, such as rubber or composite so they can withstand the pavement on an outdoor basketball court.
So why is it important to use the right type of ball? Using outdoor basketballs on an indoor court can make it difficult to dribble on a slippery wood surface. Using your indoor ball outside can damage the ball.
Indoor courts are usually made of hardwood or composite materials. The surface is smoother than outdoor courts, yet provides better traction because of the coating. Outdoor courts are commonly made of concrete or asphalt and are exposed to dust and moisture, which makes the surface less consistent.
It goes without saying that indoor basketball can be played year round. Protection from the elements, such as rain and snow. Whereas, outdoor courts are best when the weather is cool and dry.
Location plays a significant role in this as some may prefer to play outdoor basketball in places like Florida or California where they have seasons of “perfect” sunny weather.
The factors mentioned above all contribute to differences in overall gameplay. Ball control can be easier for beginners on an indoor court because the surface is more smooth and even. This contributes to a more consistent bounce of the ball, making it easier to handle.
Basketball is a good option to get kids moving, increase coordination, and help them begin to learn the dynamics of teamwork. Whether you choose indoor or outdoor basketball will depend on your personal preferences and likely your location and accessibility to outdoor courts as not all regions have them. Our best advice? Choose whichever your athlete would prefer. If they love being outside, outdoor basketball may be more fun to them and that’s ok!
